Shelter in place is an emergency protocol where you stay inside your current location and take measures to protect yourself from an external threat.

  • Severe weather (tornadoes)
  • Pandemic situations

    Basic Steps:

1. Go inside immediately 2. Close all doors and windows 3. Turn off HVAC systems (air threats) 4. Seal gaps with plastic and tape (chemical threats) 5. Move to an interior room if needed 6. Stay tuned to emergency broadcasts

For Chemical/Air Threats:

  • Seal windows and doors with plastic
  • Turn off ventilation systems
  • Go to an interior room without windows
  • Create a positive pressure seal

    For Severe Weather (Tornado):

  • Go to lowest floor
  • Find interior room away from windows
  • Get under sturdy furniture
  • Protect head and neck

    For Active Threats:

  • Lock and barricade doors
  • Turn off lights
  • Silence phones
  • Stay quiet and hidden
  • Call 911 if safe to do so

    What to Have Ready:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights
  • Water and snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Medications
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape

    Duration:

Follow official instructions. Don't leave until authorities give the "all clear."
