Main Shutoff Valve

Definition: The master valve that controls all water flow into your home.

The main shutoff valve (also called the main water valve) controls all water entering your home. Knowing its location and how to operate it is essential for emergencies.

Why It's Important:

  • Stop water during pipe bursts or major leaks
  • Prevent flooding while away
  • Required for plumbing repairs
  • Essential in freezing weather emergencies

    Location:

Varies by home type and climate:
  • Basement: Often on front wall
  • Crawl space: Near front foundation
  • Utility room: Near water heater
  • Outside: In ground-level box (warm climates)
  • Near street: Secondary shutoff at meter

    Types of Valves:

    Gate Valve:

  • Round handle, turns multiple times
  • Older style, can seize up
  • Turn clockwise to close

    Ball Valve:

  • Lever handle, quarter-turn operation
  • More reliable, recommended style
  • Perpendicular to pipe = off

    How to Shut Off:

1. Locate the valve 2. Turn clockwise (gate) or lever perpendicular (ball) 3. Open a faucet to relieve pressure 4. Confirm water has stopped

Individual Shutoffs: In addition to the main valve, individual shutoffs exist for:

  • Toilets (behind/beside toilet)
  • Sinks (under sink)
  • Washing machine (behind machine)
  • Water heater (above heater)

    Maintenance:

Exercise the valve annually (turn off and on) to prevent it from seizing.
