Condenser

Definition: The outdoor unit of an air conditioning or heat pump system that releases heat outside.

The condenser is the outdoor unit of your air conditioning or heat pump system. It releases the heat absorbed from inside your home to the outdoor air.

Components:

  • Compressor: Pressurizes refrigerant
  • Condenser coil: Releases heat to outdoor air
  • Fan: Blows air across coil to dissipate heat
  • Refrigerant lines: Connect to indoor unit

    How It Works (Cooling Mode):

1. Hot refrigerant gas arrives from indoor unit 2. Compressor pressurizes the refrigerant 3. Refrigerant flows through condenser coil 4. Fan blows outdoor air across coil 5. Heat transfers from refrigerant to outdoor air 6. Cooled refrigerant returns to indoor unit

Heat Pump Operation: In heating mode, the process reverses—the outdoor unit absorbs heat from outside air and transfers it indoors.

Maintenance:

  • Keep 2 feet of clearance around unit
  • Remove debris from around and on top of unit
  • Clean coil fins annually
  • Professional service twice yearly

    Signs of Problems:

  • Unit won't turn on
  • Unusual noises (grinding, squealing)
  • Ice buildup on unit
  • Not cooling effectively
  • Short cycling (turning on/off frequently)

    Lifespan:

Typically 15-20 years with proper maintenance.
